TENDER REMBERANCES of EARLY EXPERIENCES – RLA Image Resources

As I read and listen to the news about all the things going on, it hurts my heart terribly. Why can’t it be better than it is? There has to be an answer that works for all concerned. I know the world changes, but things should always continue to be better, not worse.

I want to relate experiences I had when I was a little girl. I was probably about 6-7 years old221_0016 and lived in the city (Brooklyn, NY). There, I found myself busy with all my toys, friends, school and my parents. I played a lot alone, as I was the only child. All of my cousins were older than I was or didn’t live close by.  My friends and I had particular times when we could play outside. We would go by each other’s home, but mostly we played outdoors. I liked it. We had plenty of room to run around, play hide n’ go seek, ball, potsy (chalk boxes with numbers) that we play with a coin or something. The point was you had to go from #1 to #5 (or #8) without touching down with two feet. What great memories. I couldn’t pick up a phone and tell them (friends) to ask if they could come by. In fact, I didn’t use the telephone unless a relative called, and my parents told me to say ‘hello’.

TRYING TO FEEL A LITTLE INDEPENDENT

So, this is a part of the life of this little girl. I hope it doesn’t sound like I didn’t enjoy my time as a little girl. I did, and I learned to play by myself; being Mommy, Daddy, Brother, Sister, Teacher and Friend (to myself J ) while I play house with my dolls. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my childhood. It was at special times that I had wished I had a sibling.

I liked the time when dinner was completed, dishes done and put away. My parents were ready to come outside and visit with our neighbors, as we children would go the two or three houses (farthest we could go) one way or the other to play. In others words, I could go play up to three doors away from where I lived. We had to be in a space where our parents could see us at all times. Whatever adults were outside would assume that they had permission to watch us and chastise us if we were doing anything that appeared beyond what our parents would have permitted. I do remember parents would call me or anyone else out, if they thought we were beyond where I was allowed to go, or do anything which I wouldn’t do if they (parents) weren’t right there watching me.

SPECIAL VISITORS WHO VISITED THE NEIGHBORHOOD OFTEN (Like Everyday)

What am I getting at by telling you these things? Well, I heard something on the news today, and it talked about the relationship or lack thereof that people have with the police these days. I’ve thought about that a lot recently upon hearing so much stuff over the news. Our relationship with the police was great, because we knew them, and they knew us. Yes, they came in two’s and walked what they called ‘a beat’ (some of you may remember this). We knew their names, and they knew ours. Our parents knew them by name. They would greet us (children) and our parents. In fact, we’d see them coming from way down the block and would run to meet them. They would ask us how we were doing in school, explain to us the importance of listening to our parents, etc. It was nice. I think having that interaction made the police more human and not just a person in a uniform. They seemed really interested in us, and what we were doing in school, etc.  It was great days, and somehow we were reassured we were on the right track as our parents would encourage us to continue.

Sometimes, as I think back or watch the news today, I wonder what happen to the neighborhood. Oh, should I ask.. what is a neighborhood today? People come and go. We wave to one another, then we go inside our home and stay there until it’s time to come out again. On occasion, there might be a moment or two to visit. In some cases, people become friends.  ‘Suburbia’ is what we call outside of the city limits. We stay in our houses for the most part and mind our business.  In the city limits, there is energy. Kids running around, pets outside with the owners and neighbors visiting on the porch or in the yard. Basically, people moving about. It was a scene that was very active and lots going on. People were visiting together talking about the day’s events or catching up on what’s been happening with one another.

 CONNECTION & INTERACTION

I miss that today. I see my neighbors from time to time. What about you? Do you visit or interact with your neighbors on a regular basis? I believe more people do that when they live in an inner city environment. My street is really nice, but most of the folks on this street do not know one another (I would assume). Even neighbors on one side of the street or the other generally wave and get in the car or stay in the house. There are rare times when you meet and spend quality time together. How does it work for you in your neighborhood? Children bring the grownups/adults together. No children, few connections.  It doesn’t exist. However, I am not saying every single neighborhood is exactly like this. I have talked with folks who talk, greet and are acquainted with people in their neighborhood. This doesn’t necessarily mean they go in and out of each other’s home at all. It just means the bonds are deeper.

Coming from an inner-city, you have no choice other than to speak. Speaking/walking with people to/from the train station, or others walking past your house will often smile and say ‘hello’. What a movement that would be here where I live. People are kind, but not very open. Most park their car, get out and head straight into the house. They stay there until they need to get in their car again and leave. I am very used to the drill now, so it doesn’t really bother me. What’s nice is seeing their face now and then, knowing that all is well, and spending more than a couple of minutes before running into the house. The children do so much better at this community ‘thing’ and personal people connection.

EVERYDAY RUNNING

However, I have to run now. I’ve got to get in my car, run to the store and come back to my home space. See you and speak to you in a week or two, if there is anything worthwhile to say. Otherwise, I will post the next issue of interest that I feel may help me and others make changes in the way we communicate and view our fellow man/woman/child.

GETTING TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER

I wonder if there was a movement started where people who didn’t know one another would clearly want to meet one another. I would also like to see our policemen visit our neighborhoods just to say hello and all of us to say hello back. That would be great and lead to an open dialogue and knowledge of the people living in the city. I believe it also opens up the neighborhood to one another. We become aware who lives amongst us and be an example to other communities. Happy Talking!  It is really wonderful and gives the opportunity to see each other as people who have much to offer one another as human beings.

I hope this will start someplace, and I hope that our local police department will join us in meeting the people residing in the streets of our city. Happy Living! I, Rita wish you well, and hope that the information I’ve offered will be beneficial to you and your neighborhood.

Are you… (ahead of)… yourself?

Two minds better then one.

Two minds better then one.

Sometimes, I can get ahead of myself. Has that happened to you? Have you been in deep thought about an idea, something you propose and not sure how it will be perceived by others? What you may not understand about Accentuate Home Styling & Consulting is that we are a different type of interior decorating company. We love to explore various levels of decorating with our clients. When they think they’ve got their idea down pat, we challenge them to try something they’ve never tried before. This is a fabulous way to keep learning about oneself. What could be better than to learn something ‘new’ about yourself?

Home decorating and design is  bringing new ideas and processes of change into a house to make it a ‘home’. Our purpose is to meet with people like yourselves (our clients or would-be clients) to determine where their thinking is regarding what they want and anticipate for any space changes in their home. It is a great time to dig deep into your thoughts, use  as many resources as you have and come up with great ideas. There are many ideas out in the marketplace, and it doesn’t mean they all fit your space as you expect.

  • Here’s where we come in. I have a couple of analogies to share with you. How many times have you decided to try something different for a meal at home? You may have even had it before, but you want a different variation. If you don’t go to a cookbook or ask someone who has cooked it before how they prepared it, you will most likely end up preparing it the same way you always have.
  • Here’s another example for you. What if you have a rash on your hand (or other parts of your body)? You may try to put some sort of salve on it, or at the very least, try to find someone else who has experienced this same malady. But instead, you decide to seek professional help from a doctor to tend to your issue. This is best, because you may spend time applying all sorts of remedies to your problem only to waste time and money in the process. This applies also to the decorating process of your space. There is so much out there in the decorating marketplace. If you’re seeking ‘different’, we may even look into wholesale to expand your variety of products for use in your home.

In addition, not only do we care about you, but about some other folks you may personally know or are acquainted with. They may be elderly and/or in poor health, having to leave their home. We need to talk immediately. Contact us today, and we’ll talk.  Also note, we are excited to work with DIY clients. We want to know what your perception is  for your space. We can add to it, and just think what will come out of this collaboration. Come on, let’s get started.

Two minds better then one.

The point I’m trying to make is defining when you are wasting time and money, rather then working with a professional decorating company such as Accentuate Home Styling & Consulting. We’ll help you step outside of your comfort zone and find other ways of styling your home.

How much did you pay for your home? I don’t really want to know. It’s just a rhetorical question. My point is don’t deny yourself from making your home what you really want it to be  by not examining the fundamentals of the reason for the changes. Searching magazines,  going to furniture stores and getting many opinions can cause confusion. Keep thinking about who lives in this space is the crux of the matter; it’s the determination of everyone having a piece of their personality included in  your plan.  When a friend, neighbor or relative has their home decorated a certain way, it only means it works for them, but not necessarily for you. Personality is a key ingredient and essential in decorating. Give your imagination a chance to be opened up to the possibilities for your space. For as many people that occupy a common space, it’s important to get input from as many occupants as possible. Let’s try it..together. Please fill in contact sheet and return to us.

WHAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN?

I’m taking a big breath, because Accentuate Home Styling and Consulting is making some changes; changes that will have a positive effect on our prospective clients and current clients. Pretty intriguing, huh?

To put it plainly, we want to say a special hello to everyone who follows us and calls on us to aid them with their interior decorating projects. We want to say hello to those who are meeting us for the first time. We are making a slight change, and a greater part of our focus will be reaching out to homeowner’s and Do-It-Yourself  interior decorating buffs. Our goal is to accentuate how change of thoughts and ideas in the broad term will allow us to meet them right where they are in their decorating decisions. From that point, we come together and reach out into the interior space where our thinking, their thinking and objectives will lend itself to go outside-of-the-box a little. It will encourage something new and different. Sounds exciting? Put on your imaginary cap and picture your space being renewed as you read this blog.

What if you already have furniture and/or decor that would work in the room specified for changes? That would be great. See, you’ve already reduced your budget needs.  As I describe this journey, and you begin to picture it in your mind, I hope you see the promise of collective thinking.  If you don’t have a budget made, we’ll help you put one together for your project. This way, you stay on point and know where you are budget wise all the time.

When you are ready or thinking about it, let’s talk. Talking never hurts in this instance. We will concentrate on your home and small office space. We can speak in person, on the phone, over Skype or in email, or all the above. It’s really about what’s more comfortable for you during this phase.  This will be your personalized plan, and  we will talk about what you want to do to make the change to your home/office space. What is going to make life easier and a joy to come home to? Comfort, relaxation and a sense of peace is what you deserve in a room designed by you, with our help to bring a big smile to your face. Say “bye-bye” to some things you’ve had for quite a while. Sometimes, it nice to offer to others who haven’t had that same experience or have nothing much to fill their wall or their interior space, except a door and a window. You’ll be able to take credit for the final WOW moment as you carry out the plan. You’ll work your plan and plan your work with the help of Accentuate Home Styling & Consulting. Keep up with us, and visit us. Leave us information to contact you. We will be available to help you, if you’re not sure of something in the plan. BULLETIN: There will be something else coming soon. You stay turned to us, and we will be very excited to tell you. Then, we want you to tell everybody else.

Thank you for your time, and we hope to hear from you soon. Our Facebook address is: http://www.facebook.com/accentuate.rla . We are on Twitter, Pinterest,  Houzz and Olioboards.  Peace to you.  Rita

Part 2: IS YOUR PERSONAL IMAGE A REFLECTION OF YOUR HOME?

Today, our blog touches on the topic from a month ago: Is Your Personal Image A Reflection of Your Home?  Many readers sent me their opinions about this topic, and we had some great discussions. Thanks again to all who participated. I was so encouraged that I have decided to do a Part 2.

Image in the dictionary says it’s an imitation, representation, or similitude of any person, thing, or act, sculptured, drawn, painted, or otherwise made perceptible to the sight, a visible presentation, a copy, a likeness,  an effigy, a picture, a semblance. Image spreads itself across lines into every part of life. Therefore, I feel it is an important issue and make a habit of exhibiting in a positive way. For the purpose of this blog, we are defining image as a personal likeness or reflection of a person’s image to their home image. Is Your Personal Image A Reflection of Your Home Image? – Part 2. This blog speaks to how your personal image and your home image are so closely related to one another. When you first see someone, without speaking a word, your thoughts begin to form and create who you believe that person really is. You may decide you don’t care for that person. What about the person’s age, where they live, how their home looks, what type of job they have, what type of car they drive; this,  all in a matter of a few seconds. What I want to point out is you cannot stop someone from thinking and forming their own opinions without correct information. Your home is a reflection of you.  A person sees you is exactly how they see your home in their mind. Does it matter? Probably not, but possibly so. Why? Because, it is much easier to spend a little time thinking about who you are, and reasons why you control the message you wish delivered. Do not leave that to someone else to do for you. Your home is your haven, your castle and your extension of who you are. Make the message real and true.

Accentuate Home Styling & Consulting is a different type of interior decorating company. We use ‘image’ as a major tool to complete the look of your home to represent the real you. No need for others to speculate, they will know just from your positive image; they will know that your positive attitude about self reflects the same message in your home life. We work with you, whether in person or through our E-Decorating process (online) assisting you in your Do-It-Yourself process of decorating. We believe image is purposeful to how you enjoy your home and lifestyle. It doesn’t matter whether you’re downsizing (a smaller space), up-sizing (a larger space) or right-sizing (staying right where you are), we work hard with you to help you reach this goal. You will feel empowered and reassured about how “we” reach decisions about the space in your home. We are your company of interest and image. We care about what you think, how we meet your needs,  and make it affordable for you as we go through the details of positive living in your home. So, the next time someone meets and greets you, they may be thinking how positive your demeanor represents you, or how negative they think you are. Please do not give anyone any reason for not thinking in a positive way about you.

I want to express the fact that I have been writing and publicly speaking about the importance of  image in each person’s life for several years. I was a personal  image consultant and presented presentations to organizations and companies. I encouraged others to become aware of the silent message(s) they send to others. My purpose is to think about how you appear to others, so there are no regrets down the road. I am not stating this as the most important issue to you. It means sending a message you want to be remembered by. Then, the image you project will definitely count.

IS YOUR PERSONAL IMAGE A REFLECTION OF YOUR HOME?

Image

You probably answered with a resounding NO, but I would say yes. One’s image can tell a history or story without words spoken, and one’s home can do the same thing. We often say we really don’t care what people think, but deep down, we do. Someone sees you from across a room or interacting with others and decides they know you based on how you look, act or react. Someone sees your home on the outside and decides they know how it looks on the inside. It may seem like it’s something small, but image can be a big booster or a let-down for any of us.

Awhile back, I spent a good deal of time talking to businesses and schools making people aware of how important their image was to their success in life. Unfortunately, it’s true. We are not quick to judge ourselves and correct our ways for the better, and we allow others to do it for us. When we leave ourselves or our home open for someone else to judge, we are hurt and sometimes angry. This happens even when you don’t ask anyone’s opinion. Who has the right? No one has the right to ridicule, but people take it upon themselves to judge, and sometimes they are making the decisions.

Since I have been an interior decorator, I have treated my clients the same way that I did when I was teaching about positive image. I teach them and empower them to recognize that the way they feel and the choices they make for their home will have a reflection on them.  I feel the image of home is a true reflection of how I think and feel about myself (at any given time). I want things to be nice and in a place. When everything is all over, I notice I get stressed and not as productive.

  • The more I do interior decorating, the more I know that image is so important. Not for others, but for myself. For myself or anyone else, it’s a reflection of how we may think about things or it’s a point where you can see something is not right for you. You know that if you  like your home decorated and neat,  and suddenly is looks like a storm came through most of the time, there may be other things going on with you.

  • You may feel inadequate in decorating your home. Many people do. Ask for help. This is what I do, and so many others like me. We cannot know how to do all things at all times. I even ask other decorators for help when I need to. Never be too proud to ask.

Sometimes, your home reflects something that is not true about you. It has its own image, based on what you do with it and to it. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it must bear the image you want to display for others to remember, and you must be aware of that image. Image is here, not going anywhere, and people will continue to judge. Be your own judge, and live with your decisions about who you are. Change yourself when you become aware that you are happier and more content when you take charge of the image of your home and of yourself. Don’t change because everybody else wants you to; change because it’s right for you.

You be the judge and think about your image. Does your home pick up your personal image? Yes or no?

RE-UP (re-decorate. re-model, re-emphasize, re-focus): THE ELEGANCE AND CREATIVITY OF YOUR DECORATING IDEAS

Starting project.

RE.- Up and get ready for a change.

I have a question for you. What ideas do you have  in your mind  about change or outlook for the days ahead? You may agree that changes made to your surroundings can make a difference in how you feel and think (especially if you’re having a stressful time). I will find a project that permits me to expand energy by putting on my creative thinking cap and finding a project  to begin. You can do this with a sense of ease!

  • Pick up pad and pencil and begin writing down exactly what you’re feeling. Once completed, read it over; look for the nearest  opportunity you can find which needs attention. This is your beginning.

Often times, our brain isn’t working to bring the ideas we’re looking for. Our head is thinking my way, and our heart is seeking to go in another direction.  As we think about re-decorating or re-focusing of a particular space, we end up getting more stressed. No need to do that when you work it out with pad and pencil. Make a plan and then work your plan. RE-Up your space. It doesn’t have to be a major project. It could be as simple as adding something from one room to another. Look for things  (you already have) to uplift and create a brightness, cheeriness and enjoyment to your present space.  Your imagination and creative flow is now working together again.  I always think a home decorating project is good and soon any stress you’ve had is gone.  The results start to show themselves to your joy (or dismay). If you are unhappy with the current results, at least you have time to make changes. If you feel your project is going downhill ….what should you do?

  • Do not give up or give in (when project moving in wrong direction).
  • It doesn’t have to be a big project; it could mean replacing one item which will make a difference. Just pick a room and get started.
  • Your project is underway. If you feel you have to spend money to complete your project, be certain to add that into your plans (no surprises).

Creativity is something we all have; some more than others. Don’t be afraid to try something different. I challenge my clients to bring  me some ideas, and along with mine,  we combine them for a magnificent outcome.

This blog wants you to concentrate and urge you to RE-UP. When you hear the word elegant do you cringe or run towards it with great expectations? When people speak about elegance in decorating they usually think … formal.  However, when thinking outside of the box “elegant” relates to a relaxed atmosphere requiring things to have a place,  the right colors and furniture.   Think ….Elegance. What picture is coming to mind? Figure out what you like, and what makes you feel content and peaceful.  What is your decorating style? I like a contemporary look,  a mixture of styles and color  for emphasis and POP.  Are you getting a picture in your mind, yet?  I enjoy how excited client’s become  as we explore all the possibilities available for their project(s). It’s time to RE-UP  and put on your creative thinking cap. Stretching and visualizing the unimaginable often surprises.

Two minds better than one.

As the project gets underway, the imagination fills up with ideas and excitement being developed for your project. Today, more than ever before, we all have  the opportunity to explore creativity, whether it be decorating or some other type of design. Let it be your Originality.  What are you good at? What do you enjoy when it comes to decor or decorating? I RE-UP often, and it keeps me in a creative mode and productive spirit. Understand, no two people are going to have the same talents or ideas;  similar, but not the same.

This is what we do as a company. We help you discover your creative self. How much fun is that? How great to have this opportunity to create something  within your home that is different and unique to you. This is all part of Re-up and exploring your talents. If you think you have no creative ideas, then think again. Then…..Let’s talk.  How do you think most television shows start? They figure out a need or want the viewer would enjoy, and they build on that. When we see results it lights up our creativity button, and we are ready for a project. They have appealed to our creative senses. Imagine discovering something that is “so you” for your own space. How exciting and fun that would be!  Collaborating is good, and we would urge you to discover what you’re decorating talents are. This is where DIY (do-it-yourself) begins. I close now and invite you to put on your RE-Up cap and start the creative juices flowing or contact Accentuate to help you get started. Either way, we wish you GREAT  RE-UP!
